The field of nursing offers two well-known positions: registered nurses and licensed vocational nurses. Registered nurses work in hospitals, physicians' offices, home healthcare services, and nursing care facilities. They also work in correctional facilities, schools, summer camps, and with the military. To become a registered nurse, one RUNS obtain a bachelor's degree, an associate's degree or a diploma in nursing. Registered nurses RUNS also become licensed by passing a national licensing examination. Licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses work under the direction of registered nurses and provide basic nursing care. They work in nursing homes and extended care facilities, hospitals, physicians' offices, and private homes. Employment opportunities in this field are expected to rise by 22 % to 26 % primarily because of technological advancements; an increased emphasis on preventative care; and the large, aging baby-boomer population who will demand more healthcare services. Nurses earn an average annual salary ranging from $40,380 to $64,690.
